"The Greenhouse" / "Dans la serre" - Edouard Manet - Living Letters
In this painting, Manet’s talent is astonishing, not only because of the incredible colors but also because of his rendering of matter. Different elements such as the exotic flowers, the deep black of the man’s vest, the women's pleated dress and the bars of the railing create an juxtaposition between natural and artificial. Manet encouraged the models to walk and talk. He went to the trouble of asking his wife to entertain the models while he painted them. The models are Jules Guillemet and his american wife. Their elegant clothes can be explained by the fact that the couple owned a workshop of haute couture on rue Saint-Honoré.
